Wasatch funnel, and a toe that was already down

The afternoon shove off the range is real. It is also a convenient alibi. If the toe was already doing all the civic work, the wind is just the narrator with a louder voice.

University Avenue sits in a funnel. On many spring afternoons the Wasatch sends a right-to-left shove that makes a well-struck iron look clever and a crooked one look cursed. Golfers arrive at Suite 9 with a weather report instead of a bag. We will listen to the weather report. We will still paint the sole. Weather does not get a column on the ticket until copper has voted.

A toe that sits down at impact — hosel too upright for the player, or a player who crowds the ball when the canyon is in the picture — starts the ball left. A left-to-right funnel can straighten that start until it looks like a hero. The player then wants to “keep whatever this is.” What this is, on a still Tuesday morning, is a pull into the sage. We have watched this exact movie on Cascade and on the muni. The wind was not the fitter. The wind was the cover band.

The other direction is ruder. A heel moon that starts the ball right will get extra help from a funnel that also wants to go right. The player decides they have a slice. They do not. They have a hosel that sits too flat for Utah dirt, plus a narrator. Thin air already made the curve shy; the wind then stole the rest of the plot. A loft conversation will not fix the hosel. A grip conversation might, if the motion is chaos. Paint will tell us which meeting to schedule.

We cannot ram for a wind. We can ram for a shine that repeats on still mornings. That is why we ask when you play. If your only hours are Saturday afternoons in a howling funnel, say so. We will still want a still-morning sample if we can get one, even if it is three swings on our board before the ram. The board is not the canyon. It is quieter than the canyon, which is the point. Quiet is how you hear the sole.

Players who work on campus sometimes only play after class, which means they only play the funnel. They want a hosel that “holds up in the breeze.” What they are asking for is a start line that is already left so the wind can “correct” it. That is a trick, and tricks rot. The first calm evening in May will expose it. We would rather you play a little boring on windy days and a lot honest on calm ones. Boring in wind is a skill. A ram cannot be that skill.

Inez keeps photographs from funnel days and from still days when the same player comes twice. The moons do not change as much as the stories do. That gap is the whole essay. If your story changes with the weather and your copper does not, believe the copper. If both change, you may have two problems, and only one of them lives in Suite 9.

Hold a ram hour on a morning if you can. Bring the shoes. Leave the forecast in the car. We can see the flag across the street. We do not need a briefing. We need a bruise that repeats.
