A lot of rooms reach for a face sticker because it is tidy and because golfers have seen that yellow rectangle in videos. We reach for copper on the sole. The face will get its turn. If you start with the face you will spend twenty minutes celebrating a center bruise while the toe has been the only citizen doing civic work on the ground. That is how a player leaves with a launch number and a 6-iron that still leaks toward the canal at Hobble Creek.
Copper wash is thin. Reed is not frosting a cake. A thick coat turns every brush into a sculpture and then people argue about art. We want a bruise: a moon toward the heel, a smear toward the toe, or a polite dusting in the middle. Inez photographs before anyone wipes. Memory will later claim the moon was “kind of center.” The picture will not agree, which is why the picture exists.
Heel-high shine means the toe arrived first. On firm valley turf that often starts the ball right of the line you built with your feet. In Provo the curve that should follow is shy because the air is thin, so the player calls it a block or a wind. The copper does not care what they call it. The vote is to stand the hosel up, in bites, with a second wash after the ram. We have watched people talk themselves out of that vote because they “don’t slice.” They were not slicing. They were starting right with a hosel that sat too flat for their dirt.
Toe scuff is the other common museum piece. The heel never really goes to work. Starts pull. Tall players get told to stay upright because a poster in a warehouse said so. The poster has not seen Cascade in July. We flatten in small travels and we re-paint because a greedy flattening is how you invent a new leak the other way. Wedges confess this faster than drivers. Hybrids hide it on a wide footprint, which is why Reed uses a slightly thicker wash and a lower light.
Center dust with a leaky start line is the third witness. Then the face sticker earns its keep. Dynamic lie at impact can disagree with the museum on the sole if the handle is late or early. We write both numbers on the ticket. We ram only if they begin to agree after a small bite. If they do not agree, we send you to a teacher, and we are not sorry. A ram that freezes a coincidence is how Suite 9 would get a reputation we do not want.
Utah hardpan polishes faster than a coastal sponge. A heel moon that would take a season to appear in rain can show up here after a month of June. That speed is useful. It is also how golfers decide the club “suddenly changed.” The club did not suddenly change. The dirt finally filed a report. We date the photographs. We compare June to January when you come back. The comparison is ruder than any speech.
If you want the method without the essay, the tape-read page is the short version. If you want to know why we paint again after the bite, that is a separate note. Neither page is a coupon. Bring the shoes. Let the copper talk before you mention launch. Launch will still be there after the hosel is honest. It has nowhere else to go.
